I received my first camera for my 10th birthday. A pale bluey-grey plastic Kodak with a built in flashgun, using those slightly blue tinted bulbs full of wirewool that singed your fingers if you tried to replace one too quickly after firing. And of course, there was that glorious smell of smouldering plastic after each flashlit shot.
After a stint in The Royal Navy, travelling around The Caribbean and The Med, I left to put my knowledge of guided missile and gunnery systems to good use by getting in to the advertising industry.
My first job was at CDP followed by a couple of years at FGA. My love of photography took over and I decided being the other side of lens was where my future career lay.
So, keeping my Amex card, taking both a deep breath and a large pay cut, I set off on a new career path. I was lucky enough to learn my craft assisting Terence Donovan and James Cotier before setting up my first studio just off Oxford Street.
Over the years I’ve been even luckier, working with some incredibly talented art directors all over the world. I’ve been slung under helicopters. Been accosted in the middle of a shoot by someone straight out of The Sopranos on 125th Street. Been frog-marched out of Fiumicino airport by armed guards (with 15 models, full crew and 20 trolleys full of cameras and lighting equipment) thanks to the airline client not getting the correct permissions.
Swap all this for a job behind a desk? Not me!
I’ve fully embraced the digital age and own the latest high-end technology. I still shoot film and will use whichever will guarantee the best results for the job in hand. For relaxing I enjoy nothing better than getting one of my cameras halfway up a mountain, into the shorebreak or around the streets. And, when possible, finning about on a reef with an underwater housing.
I have a global network of hand-picked producers and specialist talent at my disposal, including a full underwater team.
Outside of photography, my other interests include diving, sailing, marine conservation and rugby.
